We had the opportunity to review a physical DVD of Princess Cut by Watchman Pictures.
This year of being on the Homeschool Review Crew has been special. My children are older, and they have been more engaged in the actual review process of the products we have received. When they were younger, their comments were more like, “that was fun” or “I did not like that”. Everything else was from my perspective. Now, if I hear comments like those, they are followed with more detail and perspective from them. I love to hear their take on how some of the items should be used, if they really worked for them or even if they would continue using them, without my direction.
My daughter and I spend, at least, one night a week watching a movie or some show together. Some nights, it is a chick flick. Other times it is a classic movie and other times some series episode. When we spend that time together, we always end the evening with good conversation. Good conversation is what happened after we watched Princess Cut.
Princess Cut tells the story of Grace Anderson, a young woman who desires to meet the one and get married. Her impatience is only magnified when the man she is currently “dating” introduces Grace and his friends to his fiancée, who is not Grace. Of course she is devastated. Grace eventually confides in her parents and it is her father who shares some Godly words of wisdom regarding relationships and that special person God has for her.
After encounters in a jewelry store and later a coffee shop with Jared Cunningham, he and Grace begin dating. Despite the advice Grace earlier received from her father, it is not long before she finds herself caught up in another whirlwind romance. The relationship takes a negative turn when Jared makes unwanted advances towards Grace. The incident is not shown and the conversation regarding it is family-friendly, so you do not have to worry about sensitive ears. The confusion Grace experiences from that encounter causes everything in her life to spiral. It is not until after she lashes out at Drew, which leads to him being in an accident, that she again seeks comfort and direction from her parents. This time, Grace listens.
Her father, whose fledging farm is being threatened with foreclosure, shares that Grace has been trying to get a harvest (husband and a marriage) without planting the seed. I think that is a great analogy. In a packet of soybeans are pieces of paper with the words character, accountability, romance, preparation communication and patience – elements that should be established when developing a marriage-bound relationship. All of those qualities are ones she eventually finds when she meets Clint Masters. Of course, Clint has a story and that is when it gets really interesting. Nope, I am not going to tell you what happens. I guess you will just have to watch the movie for yourself.
Princess Cut is a nice movie for you to watch with your children. There are so many issues regarding relationships that are important to discuss with them. My only challenge with the movie is the director squeezes too many issues into the 1:36 minute movie. We see the good (ex: including God, etc.) and bad (ex: stalking, seduction, attempted murder, psychopathic behavior – not too scary, but still) that can happen in a relationship.

In the beginning of the movie, Grace is not so likable. She gives her heart away to men in a matter of seconds and always seems to get it thrown around like a football. With her innocence, you cannot help but feel bad for her. Grace finds redemption when she decides to turn her love life over to God.
The movie has very good intentions and provides a lot of angles about dangerous situations and true love. I do feel they were trying to fit too much movie, into too little time. It taught me, as a young girl, to make sure I wait for who God has in store for me. I should be patient and wait for married life with my husband. Overall, the movie told a great story of redemption, true love and putting your faith in God.
There are some funny scenes like when the men, who respond to Drew’s ad for Grace, show up at the Anderson’s front door. Even Drew sees Grace’s eagerness to get married. The ad simply states:
“Pretty girl. Makes great mac and cheese. We need a good man to come and get her.”
I really love the reference to Jeremiah 29:6. It is ultimately the child’s decision as to whom they should marry, but it is also our responsibility as parents to prepare them and be as guides as they work towards that future.
If you have a daughter, Princess Cut is one to share with her. If you have children, Princess Cut is one to share with them.
