We had the opportunity to review the DVD set of Drive Thru History® – “The Gospels” by Drive Thru History®.

One of the things I love about being a member of the Homeschool Review Crew is discovering new learning resources and curricula. A number of curricula we use now in our school are items that were new to me when we first had the opportunity to review them. Drive Thru History is one of those. I had never heard of Drive Thru History. I guess I am a little bit late, because Dave Stotts, the host and editor of the series, has been “driving people through history” for more than 20 years. To give viewers the best of history, Dave has visited almost 30 countries making documentaries on a number of topics that also include Bible archaeology, homeland security, religion, science and more.

The driving for knowledge continues in Drive Thru History® – “The Gospels”, which we had the opportunity to review. The DVD set contains 18 episodes, where we travel to Israel with Dave as he visits more than 50 ancient sites. His videos are more than just walking and talking about some geographical locations. Actually, he takes us to the many places and can often be found behind the wheel of a car; sometimes driving slow and sometimes fast. In “The Gospels” we travel with Dave as he treks driving his Land Rover.

Following the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, we travel with Dave as he shares “The Extraordinary Life of Jesus of Nazareth”. It is extraordinary and awesome. We are hanging out with Dave as friends as he shows us around his “discoveries”. We learn about Jesus’ life from His birth to His resurrection. Although The Gospels are not new, the way Dave presents them to the viewers is different and fun. Combining his sense of humor, hunger for adventure and thirst for Biblical knowledge, Dave manages to capture the attention of his audience, regardless of the age. My children and I, ages 10 through older, were captured by the episodes, which are 30 minutes long. You can watch them one at a time or do something like what we did, which is watching several episodes in one sitting. The entire 18 episodes are nine hours long. Binge watching is in, so you could probably watch all of the episodes in one or two days.
The DVD set comes in a hardback book-like case. Inside are the three DVDs and a study guide that includes a summary of and discussion questions for each episode. I read through the questions and we covered a few from each episode. In the guide are also pictures of some of the places we get to see while we are driving through history with Dave.
We enjoyed getting to “travel” with Dave to Israel. His presentation: driving around in a Land Rover, his sense of humor and the personable way he shares the adventure will appeal to adults as well as children. We liked being able to “visit” Bethlehem, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and so many other historical locations. For some of us, that may be as close as we get to the places we have read about in the Bible. Having the chance to see the REAL places, truly brings the stories of Jesus to life.
Drive through History is now part of or school/life.
You may purchase Drive Thru History® – “The Gospels” for $89.95.
