We had the opportunity to review the Traditional Logic I Complete Set from Memoria Press.
Okay. I know logic. Well, I think I know logic. Hmm. There is a quote in Traditional Logic I taken from a book on fallacies that defines logic as “the defense against trickey.” That is simple. I understand that statement, but logic is so much more. There is modern logic, which the curriculum is not and traditional logic, which is what your student will learn.
Memoria Press’ study of traditional logic is suggested for the use of students in seventh through twelfth grades, but Memoria Press introduces the material in its ninth grade curriculum set. If you are using the study independent of the Memoria Press curriculum set, determine if your child is ready for use {text sample}. If you are following Memoria Press’ grade sets, wait and follow when it is introduced in the ninth grade program, because it works well with the other material in that set.
The program comes with three books – student, teacher key and quizzes & tests – and an instructional DVD. There are 13 chapters, which are typically covered in one semester of school. Each chapter has a companion quiz. There is also a review chapter (chapter 14) and a final exam. A plus for me with the Quizzes & Test book is that the pages are perforated, so you may choose to remove the pages for better ease of use by the student. Also, you could just leave them attached, so you don’t have to worry about another way to store them. If you decide to use the quizzes as a review for the final exam, it may be helpful to have everything attached.
I must admit, when I first looked through the student book when the set arrived, I knew I was going to need some assistance to teach this program to my child. For parents like me, the two DVD set and Teacher Key are extremely helpful. The “A Note to the Teacher” section in the student book is very helpful for both the teacher/parent and student to read.
This curriculum went directly to River. We lean closely to a Classical homeschool, but we have only briefly studied traditional logic. Because of that, I started with him watching the lessons on DVD before he read the chapter. That worked fine for the first two chapters, but he decided to instead continue without the DVDs and with just reading through the material and completing the work. Each chapter has exercises for four days. He read the first part of the chapter on Monday and continued with the daily exercises through Thursday. On Friday, he would take the quiz for the chapter. I think he enjoyed the thinking process required to understand the material.
I actually already had Traditional Logic I on his schedule for him to use in the ninth grade. I will probably have him continue through this semester and finish with Traditional Logic II the first semester of his ninth grade year.
Just a note, Traditional Logic I Complete Set is really not that difficult to follow. I guess I sometimes look for more pictures and color, which you will not get in this curriculum. That aside, your child will get a thorough understanding of traditional logic and possibly acquire a better way of processing what he reads and hears. Traditional Logic I is just another quality and challenging product from Memoria Press.
