We had the opportunity to review the Dinosaurs and the Bible online course from Northwest Treasures.
One thing I really like about homeschooling is the opportunity for my children to pursue learning about whatever it is that really interests them. Of course, we have to get the basics (ex: reading, writing and math) done, but after that, we can study just about anything else we want. Who knew one of my children had an interest in geology?
Northwest Treasures is completely new to me. That is one of the reasons I love being a part of the Homeschool Review Crew; I get to learn about neat companies and the products they offer. Northwest Treasures is one of the neat companies. Patrick Nurre is the man behind Northwest Treasures and you can tell he has a passion for the work he does. Nurre took his love and experience in geology and turned it into a 501(c)3 organization that offers curriculum, educational kits and takes people on field trip adventures. I am a big fan of learning through a field trip.
Does your child want to learn about geology, volcanos or dinosaurs? Those are just some of the areas of study Northwest Treasures will help your child and you investigate. We had the opportunity to review Dinosaurs and the Bible, which is one of the online courses offered from the company.
Canyon is a lover of dinosaurs, so this curriculum was an easy sell to him. Dinosaurs and the Bible is geared towards students in fifth grade through adults. Although there is a lot of talking, if you have a younger child who loves dinosaurs, they may do fine with the course.
There are six video lessons and only one is a little over 20 minutes long. With short lessons and vivid pictures, your child will be engaged throughout the lesson. The videos are available by subscription at various monthly periods.
The lessons take the viewer up close and personal to locations around the world as they investigate the history of dinosaurs. You may see the different aspects of dinosaurs that are discussed. Nurre makes the Christian connection to these mysterious beings, which makes the study even more interesting. Who says science and Christianity can’t go hand-in-hand?

Each lesson has a series of questions that also come with answers, so you do not have to know anything about dinosaurs to help your child with the course. The questions are meant to be completed after each lesson, but I must admit we did not stop to answer the questions before watching all of the videos. They were interesting and Canyon wanted to keep going. The screen time to watch all of the videos is no more than what most children typically spend (good or bad) in front of a screen every day. At least, he was learning something.
Although a dinosaur fossil kit is not necessary to complete the course, one is available to purchase. I can see how it would definitely enhance the lesson, especially for a child who loves hands-on learning.
Lily attended an engineering camp this summer and, of all things, met a geologist. She was enthralled by the conversation and asked to learn more about geology. Right after that, the review for Northwest Treasures became available. She watched an episode of Taking the Mystery Out of Geology. After she watched it, she shared some comments with me:
I love the way that Taking the Mystery Out of Geology points geology to the Bible. I learned so many things in just a 20 minute video. I learned a lot of vocabulary. The definitions were explained well and I understood what Mr. Nurre shared. He talked a lot about how, as a Christian, I will encounter people who think geology points to evolutionism. But, that the study of geology really points in every way to the great flood in Genesis. It points to God.
