We had the opportunity to review a physical copy of the book The Secret Bridge by Lamplighter Publishing.
I love to read, but have not had much time until recently this year. I finally decided that there was more to life than reading school books and teacher’s manuals. You know, there really is more. Because of that, I have been looking for more books that appeal to me; not the mommy or teacher me, just me. One of the books I recently had the opportunity to read is The Secret Bridge. It is a me book.
Before even opening the cover of The Secret Bridge, I was impressed with the presentation of the book. The cover is a hardback and has a smooth leather-like feel. It does not need a dust jacket, because it would cover the beautifully designed picture you see on the front cover. The picture is embossed. Pretty! Yes! I almost fetl like I should just display the book and not read it. Well, that didn’t happen. The cover made me too curious, so I ended up reading the book, which is geared toward people age 12-99.
“Good and wholesome reading” is what you get from Lamplighter Publishing. The role models in the books they publish are meant to guide young people towards God. The characters we meet in their books are hopeful, courageous, loyal and more. As a parent, I am comfortable with handing a Lampllighter book to my child.
My daughter and I have been reading books together lately; romance. It is fun, but when it comes to romance, you have to be careful about what books you introduce to your children. Some books that include romance are too explicit. The mission of Lamplighter is “to make ready a people prepared for the Lord, by building Christ-like character one story at a time.” Because of that, I decided The Secret Bridge is a story we could read and enjoy together.
The Secret Bridge introduces us to Bridget Channing and Godfrey Bullingham, who meet on a ship after the death of her father. Bridget is penniless and sailing to connect with her uncle, who she discovers soon after her arrival has also passed. A relationship builds between Bridget and Godfrey, who eventually are married. It is simple and clean romance, which I like and is appropriate for young people to read. Now married and before they have an opportunity to begin their lives together, Godfrey is called back to service in the Navy. We are drawn into Bridget’s life as she navigates her way alone as a new bride. She also begins her journey to know God.
My daughter and I enjoyed sharing the book. We were able to swoon together and also get caught up in Bridget’s secrets and adventures. The scripture in the book compliments the story, so you do not have to be a Christian to enjoy The Secret Bridge. If you are looking for a gentle romance or just a good story, you will enjoy reading the book.
The Secret Bridge is available in hardback for $28.
