One of the products they sell is the Patriotic Penmanship book series, which offer handwriting practice for children in first and second grades, manuscript; third through twelfth grades, cursive writing; kindergarten alphabet letter practice, manuscript and they even offer a transition book with both manuscript and cursive. A fun one, Patriotic Penmanship Jump Rope Review, has students practicing writing the “jump rope” song.

We received a physical copy of Patriotic Penmanship Junior High School: Grades 7 – 8, written by Mary Ellen Tedrow. She has homeschooled for more than 20 years and is the mother of seven children. The book is a glossy covered, paperback book with 69 pages. There are 30 cursive handwriting lessons for your student to use. It is suggested lessons be covered weekly, but you may choose how to best utilize the program in your school.

Lily worked on this review and completed one handwriting lesson per week. My children do handwriting daily even if it is just practice writing their name. She used Patriotic Penmanship daily using the following schedule:

Monday: Read the quote for the week and she did a Wikipedia (don’t hate) search for the author of the quote/poem to learn more about them. She also studied the key vocabulary words (if any), which are taken from the quote.

Tuesday: Completed the Tracing Practice.

Wednesday: Completed the Writing Practice.

Thursday: Completed the Full Quote practice.

Friday: Recited the quote for the week. Lily has a great memory.

I really like the addition of Patriotic Penmanship in our school. Along with learning scripture, poems and famous quotes/words, students are improving their handwriting skill. Along with better writing, children are putting to memory inspiriting words and excerpts of great works.

The only place I see for improvement would be the design of the book. Perfect binding is used and it made it a challenge trying to hold or fold the book open, so Lily could write on the pages. I think either having perforated pages, so the page can be removed from the book, or opting to spiral bound the book would be better for handwriting. If I decide to purchase additional books in the series, which I may do, I will probably have the book rebound as spiral just so we can use it more easily.

Laurelwood books also offers used book services for buying as well as selling books. If you are looking for a book and want a reasonable price, check with Laurelwood Books. If you have books taking up space on your bookshelves and need to find new homes, Laurelwood Books may want to purchase them. Learn more how to take advantage of this offer.
