We had the opportunity to review the Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan by A+ Interactive Math.
Even after homeschooling for more than five years, the question as to whether or not my children are where they should be academically by grade, in certain subjects, crosses my mind every once in a while. Math is one of those subjects that causes the most concern, because if your child gets behind, it is not impossible, but it may be difficult for them to catch up. A+ Interactive Math has created the Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan to assist parents and teachers in evaluating learning gaps in a child’s math skills through a thorough placement exam, which is followed up by an individualized lesson that is created just for the student to address those gaps.
I had two students who worked on this review. Although they are in the fifth and sixth grades, I had them test for their knowledge of material in their previous grades, since they are still learning grade-level work in the current school year.
With this three-month membership, parents and teachers have access to test up to 10 students and create detailed lesson plans for them after the testing is completed.
Both River and Lily were tested on 17 math topics from number sense, addition and fractions to elementary algebra, probability and statistics with a number of other math topics they should be knowledgeable about in their grade level.
I had them begin with the testing, which is how their lesson plans are developed. The program is designed to cover areas where the student may not be as adept. Because of that, the testing was thorough and sometimes tedious.
Those points made the program initially receive groans whenever I mentioned it was time to take another test. Despite that, as the parent, I understand the reason for the thorough testing. I know that the results that came at the end would help prepare a good lesson plan to get them up to speed in any areas where they may need more work.
My plan was for them to complete all of the tests in a matter of a couple of days and then be able to start the lessons. To make the experience more tolerable, I had them work through no more than two tests per day, which I think is reasonable. This is something you will have to determine for each child.
One thing I am confident about is the results of each test, which told me if my child was at grade level or not in a particular topic. Students may take the tests more than once, but their original results are saved the number of attempts is recorded. I had them take each test only once, because I wanted to know where they were at that point before starting on their individualized lesson plans.
The child is given a decent amount of time to complete each test question. Students are also able to view their dashboard where they can see their progress, review questions they missed and have access to their lesson plans. They may take tests again after working through the material in their lesson plan.
I let River and Lily take the tests independently. If you have a child in third grade or below, I would suggest you sit with them to watch how they work through the questions on the tests.
The program is solid in its goal of closing math learning gaps. There is a whole lot of testing going on to get to the core of the needs of the student. If your child is not use to taking tests, then this program will definitely acclimate him to the experience. I mean that in a good way.
A+ Interactive gives you 12 reasons to consider using the adaptive placement test along with the lessons. You may also have your child take a free math placement test.
