We had the opportunity to review the movie Captive, which was provided to me by FishFlix.com.
FishFlix.com is a company that is making searches for movies to enjoy for our family movie night, so much easier. “Christian movies to inspire and entertain” is its motto and there are hundreds of movies from which to choose for family movie night or just any time of watching movies with content that is decent enough to bring into your home and watch with your family.
Although we enjoy watching movies, we moved away from cable many years ago. The only way we see movies is by choice of streaming or on DVD. Even with that, many of the types of movies available do not always contain family-friendly content. There is more of a challenge when my older children want to watch something that is entertaining to them. As my children have gotten older, finding a film that is suitable for all ages in our family has been a challenge for me. We have often had to watch some movies more than once, because I know the content is appropriate and I do not have to mute or cover eyes if something crosses the screen or is said, that we may find offensive, in the film we are viewing. If those scenarios play out in your home, FishFlix.com is where you should be looking for your next film.
FishFlix.com is owned by Lukas Media, which is a distributor of Christian films wholesale and online through FishFlix.com. You do not have to be a Christian to enjoy one of the many DVD titles available through FishFlix.com. Along with offering movies that are biblical, for children or directed towards families, they have titles in those categories that are discounted, and they also offer free shipping.
The story depicted in the movie “Captive” is from a real-life event that took place in 2005 when inmate Brian Nichols escaped from an Atlanta courthouse. Nichols, who was on trial for rape, ends up killing four people during his escape before he seeks refuge in the home of Ashley Smith, whom he takes hostage.
I remember following the story on the news as it developed, but the real story was revealed after Smith was freed. Smith, a single mom and recovering drug addict, finds a common ground with Nichols through the book The Purpose Driven Life, which is written by Rick Warren. Even though I lived in California at the time, it was the first time I had ever heard of Warren. Through reading his book, Smith and Nichols – two broken people, form a relationship that leads them to an understanding that purpose in life starts with God. You have to trust God to “make things right” and reveal your purpose in life.
I love the message of the film, but will say the content is tough to watch. It is even more so, because it details events that really happened. Bad things happen to people (Ashley and Brian) and some people (Brian) do very bad things. Because of the nature of the film, I would suggest this be a great one to share with your older children 16 and older, because the redemptive spirit is one that could lead to great conversation with your children. Captive is available on DVD from FishFlix.com for $19.99.
