We had the opportunity to review digital copies of A Boy and His Dog, Dying Is Part of This World and Don’t Forget Me by Kayla Jarmon.
Kayla Jarmon has been a writer since she was a young girl. Her interest began with poems. She later penned a story for her oldest son as he was starting kindergarten. As most children starting a new adventure, he was nervous about the experience. The encouragement she received from family members, after reading the story, regarding her writing set Jarmon on a new path. Jarmon has already written three books – A Boy and His Dog, Dying Is Part of This World and Don’t Forget Me. One title is light hearted, one is informative and another tackles a difficult subject, but one we all will need to discuss with our children at some time in their lives.
A Boy and His Dog
There is nothing flashy about A Boy and His Dog. The story is simple and typical of a relationship about a boy who loves his dog and the dog who loves a boy. Although not unique, it is sweet and endearing reading through the pages of the story. The reader does not have to own a pet to understand the emotion between the two of them. One can equate the relationship as to one between two good friends.
I grew up with two dogs in my life and several cats. I love them both, but dogs are definitely different than cats (just as boys are from girls). Dogs are constant and willing companions. They will go everywhere with you and do (or at least try) to do everything you get into.
Anything can be fun together from one moment to the next. The dog is ready for the next bit of fun together with his friend.
If you have a child with a pet, they will enjoy the story about A Boy and His Dog.
Don’t Forget Me
As with A Boy and His Dog, Jarmon wrote Don’t Forget Me for a family member; her daughter-in-law who was expecting a baby. Don’t Forget Me gives us insight into how God possibly brings everything together – one of His many miracles. The miracle in the story is the lifecycle of a child through to their birth. We meet the baby just as God has created it as small as a seed. Just as we expect, the baby is already a viable and communicative being – life starts at conception.
The conversations between God and the baby are amusing and insightful. The baby experiences bouncing , which is his mother laughing and then goes through a stage when it feels like it is being stretched; the baby is growing.
Jarmon also shares the idea that the baby can hear everything from the reading of books to him to the crying of his mother; a sound he does not like to hear. One thing that the baby is reminded of throughout the story is God’s love for him and the fact he will always be there for the baby.
I found this page particularly funny, because it reminded me of the night Lily was born. That was me being rushed, by car, to the hospital. I thought for sure we wouldn’t make it.
Don’t Forget Me reminds readers that God has been with us from the moment we were just a thought, through our development, birth and is with us always.
Jarmon is a Christian. Her faith comes through on the pages of her books. Even the access codes to read the flip-books are Bible references.
Dying Is Part of This World
Goodness. Dying and death, both are a part of life. It is how every life eventually ends. Knowing that does not make it any easier. I recently experienced the death of an immediate family member. As a Christian adult, the idea is still difficult to handle. Having a relationship with God does make it easier to bear.
As a parent, I think Dying Is Part of This World is one you should read. It will prepare you for when your child is ready to discuss dying and death. You will be prepared to share a Biblical perspective on the topic and be able to direct them to the Bible for answers.
When we go to live in heaven, it’s similar to our being born into this world. While in the womb, we’re made ready to live our life on earth; while living on the earth, we’re being made ready to live forever, either in heaven or, sadly, in hell. ~ Dying Is Part of This World, Kayla Jarmon
Dying Is Part of This World is a chapter book that includes discussion questions and Bible verses at the end of each chapter. I did like what she shared regarding the topic. It is very logical and prompts the reader to go to the Bible for God’s Word. There are references to Don’t Forget Me, which is the first book in the Discussion Book Series. Dying Is Part of This World is the second book in the Discussion Book Series. Again, we are reminded that God is always with us on this journey called life.
He will also be there ready with open arms for us when we leave this earth and enter into heaven.
All three books will soon be available on audio files. Dying Is Part of This World is one I am looking forward to having available in that format.
