We had the opportunity to review Stinky Kid Math, which is a program by Stinky Kid Math.
If a math product called Stinky Kid Math does not get your child interested in math, I do not know what will. The name may make you scratch your head, but does make sense when you learn the history. You may read the story behind the name, which is cute and funny. Once you get past the name, the idea behind the company is a good one, especially for a student who struggles in the area of math.
There are three areas of math that are covered, which include Foundational Algebra (Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1); Complex Algebra (Algebra 1 and 2) and Geometry. The instruction is provided through video lessons that are comprehensive in presentation and actually really fun for the student to watch. Todd Matia, who is the CEO and creator of Stinky Kid Math, as well as a teacher in the videos does a good job of explaining the concepts. He is engaging; uses tool that capture your eyes (colors, change of background scenery, etc.). That may be a minor issue to some, but considering the target audience, which is middle school to high school students, keeping their attention during instruction matters. It also helps that the videos of instruction are short in length; around three minutes. I like math and realize it does not take a 30 plus minute lecture to explain a math concept. Matia seems to get that too. You and your student are able to learn a complex math area in a short period of time through watching short videos that teach your child how the math actually works.
We also had no problem using the videos, which was good. The idea of online programs is great, but if you have to spend most of the time trying to get the videos to load, that always takes away from the benefit of convenient 24-hour access.
I really wanted to use the geometry tutorials, but my oldest student is only at the pre-algebra level. He could have managed learning another math concept, but I did not want to introduce more as he is building a foundation in algebra. So, we spent our time in the Foundational Algebra section. Some of the topics include algebra properties, graphing; exponents and more. River used the videos for the areas where he needed more review.
Each math area has a book and worksheets that supplement the study and help the student further his understanding of the material. The book can be read online or printed for the student to use offline. The student worksheets may also be printed.
Guess what? If your student likes to play games (I have not met one who does not), Stinky Kid Math also has math games to enhance the learning, proving math can be fun.
Stinky Kid Math is not a certified full math curriculum, but with the videos, book and worksheets, depending on how your child learns, he could acquire all of the concepts he needs to understand the math areas Stinky Kid Math covers.
Your student can use the program independently. There is no need for you to know any of the levels of math as Matia provides the instruction and the worksheets come with answers. If you are game, you can even take the time to watch the videos and learn or review the math. I did watch some of the geometry videos. I wish Matia had been my geometry instructor. I did not understand geometry until the last couple of months of school; too late for a good grade.
Stinky Kid Math also meets the needs of the tech-savvy student and may be used on an iPad or iPhone, with the exception of the games. The company is working on making the games soon available through those devises.
