We had the opportunity to review a physical copy of Book 1, Rescue Me! What Superheroes Can Teach Us About the Power of Faith from The Captain Sun Adventures.
I use to read comic books when I was younger. I have to admit, when I saw the opportunity to review a comic book was available, it made me sigh. Comic (a.k.a. graphic novels) books are just not as popular with the younger generation today as they were when I was growing up. Although I enjoyed reading novels and other stories, comic books were what many kids looked forward to reading (or snuck to read when they were supposed to be reading something “more important”). Think of how we now hang on the edge of our seats while watching the first run (or binge watch) of a television series. Well, the same thing would be done with the stories in comic book. If you were not reading through and waiting “patiently” for the next comic book in the series to come out, so you could read it, you were collecting them, so you could binge-read a series from the beginning to the end.
Kids love super heroes. Goodness, even adults love super heroes. Super heroes have crazy awesome skills. If there is a problem, they come in and save the day. The world becomes a much better place. Super heroes make us feel safe and encourage us to be better.
We received an autographed copy of Rescue Me! What Superheroes Can Teach Us About the Power of Faith, which is the first book in the Captain Sun series. The other two books are Captain Sun and the Army of the Shadow Dragon.
Canyon loves the autographed copy of the book. Who knows? It may become a collector’s item.
In Rescue Me! What Superheroes Can Teach Us About the Power of Faith, we are dropped into the world of Capital City, which is being taken over by a “strange darkness”. As the people are looking at the sky and the strange phenomenon overtaking the city, they are also looking up with great expectation for Captain Sun, their hero. We learn more about Captain Sun, who recently arrived “just in time”, is a “human born with incredible powers” and “the truth (about Captain Sun) was even more amazing”. . . Does that sound like anyone you know?
The story is presented to us through the Capital City Chronicle, the local newspaper. Each edition has a spectacular headline that leads into the story. The first headline: The Origin Story follows with others like “The Greatest Rescue”, “The Bad Guys”, “For the Good of Others” and “Your Secret Identity”. Although the headline is about the super hero and his actions, the newspaper story redirects the reader to Bible and God/Jesus, who is the real super hero. Just to be sure that you understand that it is not promoting God or Jesus as fictional super heroes.
Although the Captain Sun series of books are graphic novels, it is written in a devotional form. Along with an engaging story and each major incident in the chapters, the experiences of Captain Sun and how he handles a situation is supported by a Bible verse. If anyone is going to have a challenge, it is a super hero. His arch nemesis in the story is Black-Out. When dealing with a villain or a bad guy, your faith is going to be challenged.
I like how Morgan connects the super hero story to the Bible and the verses he shares. One of our favorite headlines was “Your Secret Identity” when four average citizens responded to a signal (call for help) and transformed into the Hero Defense League. From there the next headline, “A Team of Heroes”, which referenced Ephesians 3:10. God will be known by the church (all of the people).
I also like that the bad guy is not a bad guy with bad language and really bad behavior like some of the action heroes we see today.
Morgan also includes study questions for each chapter that led to good discussion with Canyon. We both really liked the comic book and will look into purchasing the other two books in the series.
