We had the opportunity to review a physical copy of The Wars of the Jews set from Memoria Press.
Oh, for the love of curriculum. There are some you really like and there are some you really love. I love Memoria Press curriculum! I was first introduced to the company and its curriculum with its Latin series. Since that time, I have used several of its curriculum in our school.
Memoria Press offers a variety of curriculum in many subjects as well as full grade level packages and a special needs track. The curriculum is engaging, comprehensive and also pretty. Receiving a box full of books from Memoria Press excites me every time.
One of the subject areas Memoria Press includes in its program is Christian Studies. The program is designed to develop:
“Bible literacy, knowledge of church history and a strong faith and Christian consciousness” ~ Memoria Press
Over the course of the academic years, students will cover scripture while in kindergarten through sixth grade, church history through seventh to eleventh grades and finish with Christian apologetics in the twelfth grade. The Christian Studies program fits perfectly into the full Memoria Press academic schedule and pieces can also be used independent of the full Memoria Press tracks.
My daughter Lily is my reader and Bible scholar. Recently, Lily has been reading several books (ex: Corrie Ten Boom’s autobiography, The Tattooist of Auschwitzshe, etc.) about the Holocaust. Her interest in that historical period has moved alongside her love of Bible investigation and studies.
We have never used any of the Christian Studies from Memoria Press. When I saw the opportunity for her to combine the two studies she has been working through, and that is was from Memoria Press, what do you think I did? I asked to review the book set. I thought The Wars of the Jews set would be a nice tie in to her current studies as well as give us an opportunity to use one of the Christian Studies sets from Memoria Press.
The Wars of the Jews Set is written for students in ninth grade and older. If you have used other Memoria Press study sets (ex: history or literature guides), the layout will be familiar to you. The set comes with a Teacher Guide, Student Guide and text (The Wars of the Jews). All of Memoria Press’ books are well constructed, with sturdy covers and durable pages inside of the book. The pages will hold up well to pencil, pen and highlighting, which a high school student (or parent) may need to do (for notes) as they are working through the study. The Teacher Guide is laid out just like the Student Guide and includes all of the answers to the lessons in the Student Guide. Along with comprehension questions, there is vocabulary and Facts to Know.
When we started reviewing homeschool products for the Homeschool Review Crew, my children were younger and I had to take the lead with the reviews we completed. Now, everyone is growing up (sigh)! It is bittersweet, but it is also nice to hear their mature perspective on some of the products we review. This review was all Lily and she shared her thoughts on the curriculum.
Lily’s Thoughts
One of the first things I noticed about The Wars of the Jews was how easy the curriculum is to follow. I have used Memoria Press Literature Guides before, but this particular one has really gotten me excited. All of the comprehension questions at the end of each chapter are straightforward and simple. The study prompted me to really dig deeply into my thoughts and take outs from the lesson. There was also plenty of space for me to write my responses.
The Wars of the Jews puts you right in the middle of the battle between the Jews and Romans. It shows both sides of the story, without bias, and forces you to have sympathy and respect for both the Jews and Romans engaging in battle. I love how the story brings to light the extreme seriousness, as well as comedy, of the war. The ignorance, the death, the stupid mistakes and the genius strategies that made the war something to go down in history.
This curriculum will guide you skillfully through the ins and outs of The Wars of the Jews. Through my reading, I have been amazed at the similarities and differences between war then and war now. By studying history, I am beginning to realize the repetitiveness of the tragic events in life. I am encouraged to begin making decisions that will put an end to a ripple effect that has continued for thousands of years.
The Wars of the Jews set is excellent for a student who has an interest in history. The study is one a high school student can complete independently and may enjoy. They can even use it towards a high school elective credit, which Lily will do.
