We had the opportunity to review the 12-month Family Plan by CTC Math. This is their US curriculum.
I must admit, there are some products I really enjoy reviewing. CTC Math is one of them. We have had the opportunity to review CTC Math in the past and despite that fact, it continues to be new for us each time.
CTC Math is a complete and very comprehensive online math program, which is a feature I like. Many online math programs are ones created to be used as supplements. Even though I do not use CTC as a complete curriculum, I know the lessons are thorough, because they are written to teach a child what he needs to know about the math topic for his grade level.
The curriculum covers grades kindergarten through twelfth grades and offers curriculum in other math topics including basic math and pre-algebra, elementary measurement, elementary geometry, algebra 1, pre-calculus, calculus, algebra II, geometry and trigonometry for your older student.
This time around, all three of my children used the online program. With the summer, we are in between stages in school regarding math. I have been trying to focus on areas in math where each child needs more attention. CTC Math works well for that, because of the range of topics the program covers.
Although CTC Math is a complete curriculum, I had my children use the program alongside their offline curriculum. Whatever math topic they were studying offline, I would have them work through online exercises that were of the same nature. I have been using the summer months to really dig into ensuring they master the parts of math that are equivalent to where they should be academically in their grade level.
Each lesson has video instruction, basically a math tutor, who walks the student through an explanation of the topic they will study in the lesson. The videos are wonderful. The instructor is not monotone, he speaks clearly and gives a great explanation of the material. If your student is able to read, he will be able to work through CTC Math and the lessons independently.
Usually, my children would watch the video before beginning the lessons, but sometimes, if it dealt with material they were already familiar with, they bi-passed the video lesson and moved straight to the lessons.
CTC keeps the lessons brief, but concise. They are interactive and cover the material well, but also do not have your child working through a large number of problems to reinforce the material he is learning. Students are also able to print a lesson summary to use as reference or for review at a later time. Study may be done completely online or there are worksheets (pre-algebra and above) you may print for your student to complete offline.
A fun feature, which all three children enjoy, is the speed drill. Students have to answer operation questions against the time on a clock. If you have competitive children (and even if you don’t), this is a fun way to learn. It was good down time after working through a lesson.
Reports are e-mailed to you as your student completes his work. They are also able to earn certificates that may be printed as well as achieve completion levels (ex: gold, platinum, etc.)
CTC Math is a program that got me to warm up to online curriculum. Most of our school work is done offline, because I do not want them spending a lot of time on the computer. Using CTC Math is time well spent.
