We had the opportunity to review Exploring Creation Field Trip Journal published by Apologia Educational Ministries.
I did not need one more excuse to get me out of the house and then the Expanded Creation Field Trip Journal arrived on my doorstep. The book is simply a journal and scrapbook, but it is published by Apologia. Because Apologia is behind the book, it is not your ordinary journal and scrapbook.
What that means is that it is not just a journal and a scrapbook. Expanded Creation Field Trip Journal is a 64-page, spiral bound and glossy covered book. The pages are a cardboard weight made to support the glue and tape that usually comes with creating a keepsake book. It is constructed to last.
When you open the book, the journal begins with tips for preparing for a field trip, as far out as one –week prior to the event all the way up to the actual field trip day. Some important points along the timeline are preparing for a knowledgeable field trip; packing for fun; knowing learning objectives and making sure you have a plan in case someone gets lost.
I coordinate field trips for homeschoolers, so many of the tips were familiar to me. The point about preparing for a knowledgeable field trip is a good one. In my haste, we have often headed out on a field trip with limited information about our destination. That only made for the possibility of missing out on something educational or just fun.
When the journal arrived, we were finished with our field trip season for the school year. I coordinated quite a number of field trips this past school year, but we stayed close to home and only went on a few. We had no new memories to make, so she pulled her thoughts together from field trips we previously took.
I started blogging, because I never had an interest in the actual scrapbooking, but wanted to keep memories. Anyway, I decided to give the journal to Lily, who loves writing and is craftier than me. The journal may be used as a family project or a child (or even you) may grab the journal and make it their own.
The pages are colorful and invite you to not only be creative with photographs and personal drawings, but to write about your adventures (see sample pages – will open in a pop-up window as a .PDF). There are sections where you may share about all of the places you have visited in the United States; the world; where you may list specific places you have visited; special places you enjoy during the four seasons and pages where you may draw pictures and share your thoughts on how you view different physical places or things.
Just as Apologia does with most of its curriculum, they provide a code to access additional online resources. These links inspire the journal user to think beyond the page providing other ideas on how the journal may be used. They even have ideas for virtual field trips, because they realize that everyone may not be able to get up and out to some of the places they would like to visit.
