We had the opportunity to review the 12-month Family Membership, for up to 5 students from CTCMath. This is their US curriculum.
CTCMath is a complete and very comprehensive online math program. It covers math topics for kindergarten through twelfth grade students. CTCMath offers math instruction and review in topics that include basic math and pre-algebra, elementary measurement, elementary geometry, algebra 1, pre-calculus, calculus, algebra II, geometry and trigonometry for your older student. If you have a student who is doing ACT or SAT prep, they will benefit from using CTCMath.
Another option is using CTCMath as a supplement for students to fill in gaps in areas of math where they may not be as proficient. Lessons are in a video format and there are thousands of videos, lessons and quizzes from which to choose that include a huge bank of questions. You can use the program on a computer as well as on iOS devices like iPads and iPhones, and Androids. So, the math lessons can travel with you. CTCMath allows students to watch, learn, practice and review at their own pace.
CTCMath has lessons that are grade-level specific and teach a child what he needs to know about the math topic for his grade level. It is also topic focused. We do school year-round, so that allowed Canyon to take some time to review an area he needs to improve in his math, subtraction.
CTCMath has diagnostic test options that help the parent determine the student’s math proficiency. There are three type of diagnostic tests you can give your child:
Short – 20 questions
Standard 30 questions
Comprehensive – 40 questions
The parent has the option of printing the results or saving as a PDF. They can even add more questions to the test if they don’t think the results give them enough information (parent) or practice/review (student). Although the program includes in the results the amount of time it takes to complete the quizzes and tests, I like that the student is not pressured by time to complete either task.
After Canyon took the diagnostic test, I had him work through some subtraction lessons. The lesson is video instruction, basically a math tutor, who walks the student through an explanation of the topic they will study in the lesson. The videos are wonderful and not long. The instructor is not monotone, he speaks clearly and gives a great explanation of the material.
Usually, my children would watch the video before beginning the lessons, but sometimes, if it dealt with material they were already familiar with, they bi-passed the video lesson and moved straight to the lessons.
This is an example of one of the questions. If your student is able to read, he will be able to work through CTCMath and the lessons independently without audio explanation. I took advantage and had Canyon read out loud some of the problems as opposed to having audio instruction. It gave him practice with his math as well as his reading.
CTCMath keeps the lessons brief, but concise. They are interactive and cover the material well, but also do not have your child working through a large number of problems to reinforce the material he is learning. Students are also able to print a lesson summary to use as reference or for review at a later time. Study may be done completely online or there are worksheets for certain topics that you may print for your student to complete offline.
Another feature available through CTCMath is the Question Bank Wizard. I was able to create my own lesson of questions from any topic area and create a review specific for Canyon. I love this feature, because I was able to choose topics from different grade levels as well as topics. I have two preparing for the ACT and I was able to pull a variety of questions to make review lessons for my Lily and River.
A fun feature, your children may enjoy as do mine is the Speed Drill. Students have to answer operation questions against the time on a clock. If you have competitive children (and even if you don’t), this is a fun way to learn and also review/reinforce basic math skills. It was good down time after working through a lesson.
You can choose to receive weekly progress reports that are e-mailed to you as your student completes his work. They are also able to earn certificates that may be printed as well as achieve completion levels (ex: gold, platinum, etc.)
If you have been trying to stay away from online learning, CTCMath gives you a good reason to consider giving it a try. CTCMath has been a great resource for my children. We will definitely be using it this school year as we continue through high school math and grade transitions. Using CTCMath is time well spent.
