We had the opportunity to review the online Family Membership subscription from CTCMath.
When I learned the opportunity to review CTCMath was available, I got totally excited. You see, we love math in our home and we also love CTCMath.
I almost minored in math, but decided to only to pursue a degree in English. Math is fun and I am glad my children also enjoy the subject. For many children (and parents), math is not fun. Help, any kind of help, is always welcome, but it must be the right kind of help. CTCMath is the right kind of help in our home.
CTCMath is a complete and extremely comprehensive online math program that covers grades kindergarten through twelfth grades. Along with lower level math, it offers curriculum in math topics including basic math and pre-algebra, elementary measurement, elementary geometry, algebra 1, pre-calculus, calculus, algebra II, geometry and trigonometry for your older student.
The program is online based and all your student has to do is log in and he is ready to begin learning. We have used CTCMath during different semesters. Math tends to get more detailed as students move through the higher levels. Occasionally, my children need more explanation regarding a topic they are studying in math. I can give some help in those areas, but I am finding I need some assistance. My memory sometimes fails me. Thank you CTCMath for helping to jog it!
Once your child logs into their account, they have access to any area from kindergarten to higher levels of math (high school). All three of my children, fourth/fifth, eighth and ninth grades are able to use CTCMath. If you have multiple children, the program is a wonderful one that provides great instruction and is affordable. Each child receives their own log in, so they may choose the level and course of study.
Before they started a topic in the stream they were working through, I had each of them take the standard test to see where they were in the topic. This is a good tool for both the student and parent. If you are curious as to where your child is grade-wise or in a math area, you will appreciate the pre-testing your child is able to do before using CTCMath. Each did well enough to begin working through the lessons without my assistance. As they progressed through the material they would take a comprehension test, which would cover what they had already learned.
One of the features I really like about CTC Math are the video lessons that precede each assignment. They are not very long and walk the student through instruction for that assignment. If you take the time, you can match the video lessons to the primary math curriculum you are using (if using CTCMath as a supplement) and have your child watch the video that coincides with what they are doing offline. After the video instruction, the student completes an interactive lesson of questions covering the material they watched on the video. There is a lesson summary the student may print and use as a reference to review later.
I also like the weekly e-mails I received that informed me of the progress my children were making at the end of each week after completing their lessons.
If you are “fearful” of online programs, I would encourage you to not be that way. I use to be and now, I look at online and computer-based programs as an asset. First, if you do not have the knowledge in a subject area and second, if you just do not have the time to teach the subject. There were a couple of days when I had not prepared offline math assignments. I sent the children to the computer and they completed math topics through CTCMath that gave them a math workday that was quite satisfactory to me. Sometimes, they learned something new. Usually, I used CTCMath as a supplement to reinforce what they are already studying. It was also helpful for them for refreshers after returning to school from the summer break.
Some of the features the children enjoy are the speed drills. This was good down time after working through a lesson. In the upper level math, worksheets are available for them to print and complete. We did not use the worksheets. My children are past the stage for using math worksheets right now. They also enjoyed trying to earn 100 percent in a topic. Because my children have access to all grade levels and topics, they have taken the initiative and studied topics in higher grade levels. I also have one child who enjoys completing some of the lower level grades as a refresher (yeah right), because she enjoy getting 100 percent.
CTCMath is well liked in our homeschool. Although my children do not struggle with math, we will continue using the program. CTCMath is an excellent program for students who are struggling in math, “hate math”, think math is all right, kind of like math, love math or cannot get enough of math; all students. It allows children to work independently through what can often be a challenging subject.
We will continue to use CTCMath as a supplement in our school.
Take a look at the video demo, which tells you a little bit more about CTCMath. Now is the time to check it out because there are two specials:
Availabilty
Free trial—>https://www.ctcmath.com/free-trial?d=NCBXRUVL&campaign=CREW
CTCMath has also changed how its free trial works. It is no longer a full four-week trial, but rather a content restricted trial. There are no time restrictions, however parents can only access the first lesson of each topic.
