We had the opportunity to review the physical products of The Ultra Safe Safety Scissors and The 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit from The Pencil Grip, Inc.
When my children were little, we did a lot of arts and crafts. Where have those days gone? Along with finding the perfect pencils, crayons, markers and paints to use, the hunt for other tools like paint brushes and scissors were part of the hunt. Finding child size scissors for their little hands was not a problem. The challenge was finding safe-use scissors for all children who wanted to use scissors. That included children who were a little too young to be using something with a blade. Finger safety is always a concern. The finger sizes were fine, but I was always concerned someone was going to accidently cut themselves or lose a finger.
You see that? Those are the Ultra Safe Safety Scissors we had the opportunity to review. The safe, protective guard covers the area where the blades move (keeping the fingers safe) and allows your child to cut most anything (ex: paper and thin string etc.) that fits between the blade and the safety guard. The guard on the scissors is safe enough where your child could use the scissors unattended. Although I would not advise you do that, the scissors are that safe to use.
The yellow spring gives assistance to those hands with less strength or coordination ability. The scissors are suggested for ages three and older. The safety spring allows you to adjust the scissors and their ability to grow with the strength and ability of your child. The scissors are also ergonomic in shape and are comfortable for holding. I was even able to comfortably hold and cut with the scissors.
The other product we got to use is the 3 Step Pencil Grip Training Kit.
Pencil grips are a real deal for me. Ask my children and they will tell you how many times I correct the way they hold their pencil (or pen or fork or knife, etc.). It is a funny thing, because I do not remember learning proper pencil grip when I was younger. I think it just happened and now it is an obsession with me; just like how one holds an eating utensil. I am certain there are more important issues that could take up my time. I know there are, but for now, the Pencil Grip company helps me with my cause; teaching proper pencil grip.
The Pencil Grip Training Kit comes with three different grips, which is part of the three-step process.
The Crossover Grip – Training
The Pinch Grip – Transition
The Pencil Grip Original – Graduation
Although there is a three-step process, it is suggested your child use the grip that is most comfortable for them. The pencil grips are not just for training the fingers, but may also be used regularly for grip comfort when writing. If you have a new writer who has difficulty holding their pencil, starting with the Crossover Grip – Training may be best for your child. They will be able to feel the proper way to grip their pencil creating a familiarity that will promote a great grip in the future. Once the child gets comfortable with that one grip, they may transition to the Pinch Grip.
The Pencil Grips are great for use by children and adults. Along with great comfort while holding. The Pencil Grips will help all users properly hold their writing tools.
Some moms may be happy to learn the grips are latex-free and phthalate-free.
