We had the opportunity to review Reading Kingdom Online by Reading Kingdom.
Reading Kingdom Online is a reading program that is geared towards children in preschool, kindergarten, first, second and third (ages four to 10 years old). It is based on a reading system that was developed by Dr. Marion Blank, who has a Ph.D in Medical Psychology. With more than 40 years of experience in the study of language and literacy, Blank is recognized by her peers as a top expert. Blank and her son, Jonathan, are the mother-son duo behind the creation of Reading Kingdom whose dream is to “bring literacy to everyone in the United States and help those abroad who want to learn English by creating easily accessible and highly effective education methods.”
Canyon had the opportunity to review Reading Kingdom. I have grown a silent appreciation for online programs, but we still do the majority of our work offline. The first thing I had Canyon do before beginning the lessons was to take a placement test. The results of the assessment allow a customized learning experience to be created for the student based on their current reading and writing skills. Reading Kingdom parents are encouraged to not assist their child while they are taking the placement test.
We (parents) just love to help, because that is what we do. I was careful not to assist Canyon (eight years old) and I must admit, it was really hard. The placement test is something a child may take independently, which gives you a good idea of how they may do while suing the program. He was easily able to follow the directions provided by the talking owl and was able to complete the test. The assessment was long. Although I had Canyon complete it in one sitting, you may consider letting your child do it in two. Although the test was long, I knew it was necessary for him to take It before beginning the program, so he could begin at the correct level to properly use the program.
There are a number of exercises for the student to complete. An example is, he was to select the same letters that appear in the word above the scrambled letters. Although this is something I think is below Canyon’s grade/age, this is where he was placed, but I will say the exercises do eventually become more challenging.
After the assessment, Canyon was placed in level one. Although I think Canyon should have been placed higher, he was able to quickly move through the lessons.
Each lesson is about 10 to 15 minutes long. Canyon completed at least two session per day. Sometimes, he would do three.
In the second level, he had practice in punctuation, typing and reading. Clicking the keyword in sentences activity was one Canyon enjoyed.
Canyon enjoyed using Reading Kingdom and will probably continue to do so as a reading supplement. Now that he is on the second level, the program is becoming a little more interesting, because every once in a while, he is challenged. Maybe as he moves to the next level, his interest will continue to increase.
Take time and try the 30-day trial to see if Reading Kingdom is right for your family.
