We reviewed Middlebury Interactive Languages Middle School French 1 by Middlebury Interactive Languages geared towards children in grades sixth through eighth without a teacher.
I am one who believes language (foreign or domestic) is something that can and should be taught to children at an early age. Believe it or not, their little minds really can handle it. Of course, you should begin with your native tongue, but adding a foreign language to the learning they experience may do them some good. I have met a number of students from other countries and for them to know more than three languages is very common.
Middlebury Interactive Languages offers foreign language learning in four languages that include Chinese, French, German and Spanish. They have curriculum for children in kindergarten through twelfth grades, even offering an AP credit option to high school students.
I considered requesting to review Spanish, but eventually made the decision to try a language that I was familiar with and my children may enjoy learning. We got to review French. Six courses of French are offered with programs for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. There is one semester for kindergarten through second grade; two semesters for third through fifth grade; two semesters for sixth through eighth grades and three semesters for grades ninth through twelfth. Students may even take fluency and AP courses in French. Basically, if you want to learn French, Middlebury could be the answer.
Middlebury Languages is an immersion program that has your child scheduled to complete a one semester course in six months. During this time, the student is introduced to the language and vocabulary. The interactivity allows them to study, practice and participate in conversation, further learning the language. The student is able to continue through the program at their own pace; taking it slowly or moving quickly through as they learn new areas of the language.

Logging in and getting started was totally easy. Lily and I watched the introduction video, which tells you exactly how to work through the program. It also gives the student an idea (watching the video for instruction) of what how they will proceed through the lessons. Everything is online.
To say Lily loved the program would be an understatement. I was surprised at how she moved through the lessons. On some days, she completed more than one lesson, even though it is suggested one program a day is sufficient. To help with her learning, she took notes writing down new words and anything else she felt she needed, so she could practice while offline. There are also help resources the student may print. The notes she took were more personal to her needs. One hindrance on our part was not having a speaker. I thought we did have one, so I will be adding that to our school supplies list. It is not required, but is extremely helpful with the self-recording to listen to how you are pronouncing your words or phrases.
Along with the learning instruction for the student, there are some helpful tools for the teacher (parent) too. You are able to see your student’s progress, which also includes their grades on quizzes and tests.
Lily is definitely going to continue using Middlebury Interactive Languages. She took to the program so easily and was walking around the house speaking French after the first lessons. It is nice she is able to move through the lessons without me hovering over her. I guess this is her introduction to more independent type of study. She has done a good job of pacing herself and completing the lessons.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
Middlebury Interactive Languages Middle School French 1 one semester course is available for $119 without a teacher or $175 with a teacher. If your student is older, like in fifth grade or above (especially in high school), a teacher would be of great assistance. Your student will have someone to work with him to ensure he is learning properly and also pronouncing the language correctly.
