We had the opportunity to review Wonky: The Crazy Cubes Card Game and Tapple: Fast Word Fun for Everyone by USAopoly.
Games, games. Who does not love playing games? Who does not love playing really fun games? USAopoly was extremely generous and gave our family two very different games to learn about and play together as a family.
I let River and Lily take their shot playing Tapple. They are both very competitive, so they were ready to take on the challenge.
If you like playing with words, Tapple is for you. Using only 20 of out of our 26 alphabets (q, u, v, x, y and z are not included), your challenge is to find words that begin with the letter and that fit the category from which your word must describe. The players only have 10 seconds to come up with an answer. In theory, that sounds like a long enough time. When under pressure (not bad) to come up with an answer, time flies.
Before they started playing rounds of the game that “counted”, they played some practice rounds just to get an understanding of the game and the amount of time they would have to guess an answer. I have got good game players, so it was River and Lily were great competition for each other. They were still challenged by the game and each other.
Tapple really has a lot of potential for fun as well as learning. A child uses critical thinking; vocabulary and spelling skills. I am glad it can work with the timer on or off, so children who may feel too much pressure to beat the clock, can still enjoy playing the game.
Tapple is recommended for players, age eight and older; two to eight players may play and it is a 10 to 20 minute play time for the game. Squeezing a game of Tapple into a school day during a break would be really great fun. Your children would be having fun; be challenged and enjoying something together.
Wonky is wonky and you have to be able to create with the wonkiness (I think that may be a word). If you have a child who likes to build things, they will definitely love this game. The blocks are not traditionally shaped (ex: right angled and squared sides) as a builder would prefer, so your child has to be creative and up for the challenge to build or stack using the wonky shaped blocks. They must be able to stack without knocking down the tower that is being built. It is possible, but it is definitely not easy.
Each player is dealt seven cards. The game begins with a player pulling a card from his hand and following the instructions on the card. If the player is unable to follow the directions on any of his cards, he must pull a new card from the deck. Stack the blocks slowly and carefully, because you do not want them to fall. If the blocks fall during your turn, you are penalized by having to grab more cards from the stack. The first player that stacks without the tower falling and gets rid of all of their cards wins.
My children really enjoyed both games, but I think the builder in them came out, which was probably why Wonky kept getting pulled out for play.
Wonky is suggested for players, ages eight and older and is for two or more players.
Just a note: Tapple does require the two- double A batteries, so it is not open and go. I just tell you that, so you will have your batteries on hand and be ready to play once your game arrives.
