We had the opportunity to review a physical copy of the consumable Internship for High School Credit workbook, which is published by Apologia Educational Ministries.
I cannot tell you how many times I changed my career direction while in college; engineering was my first choice. Although I love math, I quickly learned I could not force a love combination of engineering and math. I quickly made the move to a math major only and it was not far into that school year that I knew I loved math, but not enough to make it my career. After completing two years of college and into my third year, I finally decided English was the path for me. I just did not know what I wanted to do with it. Let me tell you, waiting until you enter college is not when you should start thinking about what you want to do for a career; you should start earlier, like in high school. I believe I wasted a lot of time. I wish I had started considering my options while I was in high school.
If you look on my book shelves, you will find almost every book (yeah, really) Apologia Educational Ministries has published. There are a few I still do not have, but I am sure my shelves will reveal we are an Apologia family. The studies in the areas of Bible and science are great. I have also found its Homeschool Helps products to be great tools for me as a homeschooler.
The Internship for High School Credit {http://www.apologia.com/home/506-internship-for-high-school-credit.html} is another great resource from Apologia. The program tagline is “Practical Help to Explore and Direct Your Career Plans” and is geared towards students in ninth though twelfth grades. It is written by Sherri Seligson who is also the author of the recently released and updated Marine Biology science curriculum. If you have ever heard Sherri speak, you will see she is quite personable. As we were working through the curriculum, I kept hearing her engaging personality coming through the lessons.
Sherri has created a course that will not only benefit the high school student who knows what he wants to do in his career, but also for the student who just may want a job. The program guides the students through the process of finding/creating an internship opportunity to help them discover their interest in a future career. The workbook program is meant to be used by the student, but it is suggested parents work through the program with their children. There is even a section, Part II: Information for Parents, specifically directed towards the parent. There instructions for both the student and parent are step-by-step, ensuring nothing is missed in the process for successfully acquiring an internship and a student completing it with knowledge regarding an area of work.
The program is 16 weeks with the student setting semester goals for themselves. There are also weekly activities for the student to complete. The questions are thought provoking and the answers the student gives will enable him to make good decisions regarding the career path he chooses. The questions Sherri asks in each lesson require the student to really focus on the purpose of the internship; figuring out their future goals – whether it be college or other.
Yes, your student could complete an internship program without using the Internship for High School Credit, but I would say they will not get the full benefit from the internship. Most company internships have their own goals/list of requirements for the student. The focus of those requirements is usually company-based and not reflective of the student side. After completing their internship and the workbook, a student will have a better idea of whether or not they want to continue pursuing studies in that area or pursue college for that field or go straight into the work force or other. The program finishes with nice touches like writing a thank you note to the company where the student interned and updating the student resume.
My oldest son is just now the age for interning. Reading through the workbook has given him some ideas as to how to go about acquiring his first “job”. Once he finds his opportunity, we will complete the workbook.
Although the student will not receive pay for their internship, they will be able to earn high school credit. Sherri has instructions on how a student may earn one half or a full credit for completing Internship for High School Credit.
